The Dolomite Mountains in northern Italy have trapped a lot of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The same has happened around the world. CO2 is the molecule of life. Most of it must remain available circulating in the CO2 cycle between the atmosphere, the oceans, and life on land or else life itself will fade away.
