How much of the pollution problem is caused by poor local people throwing their trash directly into the sea and how much is caused by rich nations exporting their trash to poor nations to get it out of sight and not build tremendous dumps nearby? A lot of the problem is caused by rich nations claiming they are "recycling" their garbage. Disgusting!

If current pollution rates continue, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish by 2050, said the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Eight million tonnes of plastic - bottles, packaging and other waste - are dumped into the ocean every year, killing marine life and entering the human food chain, UNEP added. “Let’s abolish products that we do not need ... if you go to tourist places like Bali, a huge amount of the plastic picked from the oceans are actually straws.”
