Die Erde steht ständig im Strahlungsausgleich, so will es die Thermodynamik, tags mit der Sonne und nachts mit dem Weltall. Die Erde strahlt nachts den grössten Teil der tags von der Sonne erhaltenen Energie ins Weltall durch Infrarotstrahlung (IR) zurück. Ein Teil der eingestrahlten Energie wird in andere Energieformen umgewandelt oder von Wasserdampf und anderen IR absorbierenden Gasen wie Methan und CO2, zurück gehalten. So die qualitative Betrachtung.
Quantitativ gesehen ist es dabei fast allein der Wasserdampf (Wolken) der IR absorbiert, weil er in allen Frequenzbereichen des IR aktiv ist, das CO2 aber absorbiert in nur einer einzigen starken Frequenzbande.
